Nothing new...until now!

I guess I am too busy working or reading other (more interesting) blogs to have posted in ...what...?...almost 10 months!!!

Well, a new an exciting development has occurred. A LinkedIn group of Graphic Designers in North San Diego County has been formed. Hooray! We have met a couple of times and there are some TALENTED folks here....

I am SO happy to FINALLY meet my peers. I have been trying and waiting for 14 years to finally collaborate and share ideas with people who do what I do!

I will add the individual links for the designers later.... I just want to get this post up and save my dignity.

Carlsbad Art Surf

So....Carlsbad is inching toward total art awareness. The first annual ArtSurf started last Friday and this is good news for local artists! Many of the windows of downtown businesses were decorated by a wide variety of cool murals.
One of my new favorite artist & art cheerleader is Bryan Snyder, of Snyder Art. He is a local Carlsbad boy who came back from his art school education to flourish in his own backyard. He does a very cool sort of morph between Jackson Pollack, Van Gogh and Andy Warhol. You have GOT to check him out!

Homage to the Unknown Rock Artist of North Carlsbad

I have the incredible good fortune to live right next to the Pacific Ocean. I also have the incredible good fortune of having enough time almost every day to talk a long walk by the beach. Every day is different, nature has an inexhaustible combination to offer each day: wind, sun, clouds, storms and tides.
Today, as on many days, I passed this rocky area where a person, whom I have never seen, periodically creates these rock formations.
I wish I could catch him/her in the act and thank them for making their whimsical and mysterious mark on my world. So, to the "rocker" who creates these sculptures on the beach south of Tamarack & north of Canon, I salute you!!
Today, it looks like a crowd of rock spectators watching the winter waves...

Nearly Not November Post.....Lino artist Justin Miller featured

As I have mentioned, this blog is about making space for your greatness. Block prints have a very special place in my heart, not only because I totally dig bold, graphic & decorative designs, but because this is what prompted me to get back into art myself....

Justin's work is an ideal I am now striving for--simple, bold, beautiful composition and a strong graphic style. Now that I am carving and making prints myself, I so appreciate the talent he has in positive/negative space.

Am finally getting around to giving Justin his due....please enjoy these beauties.

After a month of craziness (which is a relative term for a middle aged woman: actually means travelling for two weeks, one car accident, three concerts and a family weekend at college) which may be absolute normality for the younger folk....I am back!

About a month ago, my husband and I went to an art show which featured this most amazing artist, Todd Carpenter, whose works are done in monochrome. We both fell in love with his work.....most of which looks photographic....until you come right up to the image, and you realize it is a painting. His website does NOT do the works justice.....you have to see them in person to fully experience the duality of the work. Some are so alternatingly haunting and inviting....his color (or greyscale) precision is only appreciated after many viewings. I am so glad I was introduced to his art through d.goth, who is an amazing artist as well as mentor and facilitator of other artists. She is having her own workshops of art and poetry throughout the fall. Please go to www.dgoth.net to find out more about her art and haiku workshops.

I bought my husband one of the pieces, as a surprise for his 50th birthday, one that he had loved from the show. But the one I am lusting for is this one ...it is the one I want for MY 50th birthday (which is next year). I hope there is some way I can possess it....I can't explain how it moves me.

So, I am totally promoting Mr. Carpenter this week (which may turn into a month, at the rate I am posting!)....so please go enjoy his website. If I get any info from him on upcoming shows I will be sure to post them here!

Who knew a world in black and white could be so endlessly fascinating?? Thanks, Todd, for showing us that it can be.....

BEADS GLORIOUS BEADS!

Back to my regularly scheduled promotion of fabulously talented people.....this week we have the amazing bead/glass artists of the Talmadge Art Show http://www.talmadgeartshow.com/
So many talented bead, glass and mixed media artists in such an inviting space. If you are free this Saturday, August 16 from 10am to 4pm, check it out!

This year they are holding the show at the new built Encinitas Public Library http://encinitaslibrary.pbwiki.com/ which is reason enough to go...it is a nicely designed space with a killer ocean view! The common room is particulary cool...lots of stone and glass. I have designed websites for a couple of the artists featured in the show.

Here is some lampwork bead jewelry made by my good friend Anthea Beletsis. You can see more of her work at http://www.antheabeads.com/. She has a big bowl of beads at her home that are so fun to play with and look at....such yummy eye and hand candy. It makes me want to greedily take them all home to play with.

Also, Priscilla Rogers, of http://www.oohlalabeads.com/ will be showing her amazing bead jewelry. She is also a lampwork bead artist and owns Ooh-La-La Designs. You can also see her work in Spanish Village (studio 9) in Balboa Park. Check out these two handmade beauties:

My Brand New HuliHuli!

I am taking a momentary break from promoting my artistic friends to promoting my dearest friends....one in particular, Tressie Armstrong, who, among other things, is one of the most generous souls I have ever encountered. She would give you the shirt off her back, take in as many stray puppies as could fit in her cute little house and never think a thing of it. In fact, it is that she is so free with her love and generosity that makes her so special. There is no hidden agenda, no keeping score...just a total love.

She is kind of like a puppy herself, just all motion and enthusiasm. She is willing even before she knows what she is in for!

Today she did something really amazing. She bought me a bike. And not just any bike.....an Electra Hulihuli beach cruiser! It is so beautiful and the funny thing is that is is the blond version of her black beach cruiser. Isn't it so cute???

Look at the detailing....it has whitewalls!!!

She has this same version in black. So now we will be the middle aged yin and yang ladies riding our cruisers in Carlsbad. The pedaling version of Thelma and Lousie!

Thanks dearest Tressie....I will ride this until either my butt or the seat wears out, I promise you! This is the most fun I have had in a very very long time. And the best part is, you will be sharing the fun with me. I love you, soul sister!!
